What I feel that I am bringing to the equestrian world is the missing link in how to develop a true bond and how to communicate with a horse that causes a horse to trust you, respect you, to be attentive, and to want to follow your lead. Training methods are not focused on developing a true bond with a horse like the one I had with Strawberry.
The ones that speak of developing a bond like round pen methods do not create a true bond. The reason for this is that training a bond in a round pen the human imposes his presence on to the horse, which opens the door to fear and mistrust. This causes a horse to surrender to the human’s presence because he has no other choice. The bond is fear based. This is starting the relationship on the wrong foot. Even the practice of catching your horse each day, you are starting out on the wrong foot.
When you walk up to your horse without permission the horse sees that you have entered his space and that he needs to set his boundaries by moving away. What you want to do instead is have the horse come to you without your influencing him to do so. This way the bond is genuine.
When a training method continues to pursue a horse the horse sees the trainer as a predator and further pursuit causes a horse to surrender and do what he is told. He learns that being close to a human he is less traumatized than trying to escape. He surrenders like the picture of a horse I have seen on Facebook where the horse is tied to a plastic chair and thinks he must stay there due to the fear of what would happen to him if he left it.
The time it takes to allow a relationship to bloom will dramatically decrease the time you usually need to train your horse. When a horse is not defensive and feels secure his mind is open. When a true friendship is shared a horse will respond to you as if he was already trained or he will only need just a bit of direction. All you are training a horse to do really is getting a horse to respond positively to a request the way you intended him to. That is simple with the bond is there.
In the online course you will learn a lot from seeing all the different ways I approach each student in how to go about using the Waterhole Rituals with their individual horse. There will be times that your horse will need to listen to your leadership when he would not want to and I will help you over those hurdles. You will learn when to ask, how to ask, and how strong or light to be with your aids. In most cases you will not need to touch your horse. If you need to use the reed, it will not hurt the horse because the reed can only give a suggestion. Most everything will be addressed with body language only.
Training a horse through the Waterhole Rituals your treating your horse like how you would like to be treated if the tables were turned. Your mission is to develop a desire in your horse to seek out your company, not by moving his feet to start the process but by waiting for your horse to come to you. When he approaches, you then can guide your horse easily by having his full attention when he is open to following your influence.
What caused the horse to learn quickly are mainly these three guidelines only. First that he feels the bond in the moment of your request. I will show you how to set him up for that. Second is how you ask and I will help you with your approach. And the third is choosing an exercise that will flow easily in your horse’s advancement of his training.
Trial and error and the program I design for you and your horse will develop these abilities. I would suggest you write these guidelines in a workbook that you set up for yourself. I will be pointing them out throughout the class.
As we begin to Share Territory with a horse waiting for the horse to start the bond is the self-realization part of the course. This is a time to get truly present to the moment. Sharing Territory is a time to clear out all the things in your mind to access your intuition. Getting in touch with your true nature will empower you to have a natural ability in communicating with your horse. Your heart will become open and like a child you will naturally know more in how to grow the relationship to build the respect of your horse while the bond is growing.
What you are learning from your horse is a universal way to communication with all living things. Through communication you can create well being, cooperation, trust and willingness in others to support you in your needs. Developing this ability will also cause you to want to do the same for them.
Thank you for this opportunity to share with you what gives me an ability to achieve the relationship and dance at liberty that I share with horses.
