'Annie' Pregnant Rarely have I witnessed an animal recovering from such abuse. The trembling stance, the vacant eye. I have seen the symptoms before. Yet , I can see this mare never knew what horrors, expectations, or cruelty would be forthcoming on a daily basis. This is much different than neglect or standing on a Premarin line day after day. It is the worst kind of horror. She will spend time, she will heal, & she will never have another bad day. Annie resides now in permanent sanctuary at Rancho Refugio.
Standing on the feedlot with her own foal by her side, she could not ignore three newly orphaned foals. Terrified and panic stricken as their mothers were torn away, she quietly rounded them up and nursed them all. We provided a safe haven while "Angel" helped the young foals learn. All is well now. You are safe.
"Aspen" frolics never having experienced a bad moment in life. He jumps for sky pronouncing his presence! Look out world I have arrived!
'Avalon' is the Unicorn. Her pale dappled coat is the color of moonlight. Her eyes change with the light, first a glimpse of golden hues, then slipping into a watery blue only to fade into a soft green. Translucent, she slips in between dimensions. She was found wandering a rural road, pregnant, and no one claimed her. After coming to us her filly was born here, another gift from the heavens.
'Charming Sydney' saying "hello"
A Premarin mare in need of a home, 'Dazzle' is the keeper of secrets. She nurtures, and listens and provides counsel. She was best friend while she was with us. Even now from her new home, I can feel her love.
"Gennie" is an orphan from the eastern foothills of Calif. A group of Auntie Mares took turns loving and nurturing her. She headed to her new home in 2015 and left a beautiful, trusting, gorgeous moving mare. Lucky Kelly has a great horse.
'Jasper' never came to Pregnant Mare Rescue. We raised the money for his intestinal surgery. While it was touch and go for a while, Jasper made it back to good health!
Jayce was an orphan and came to us frightened and reserved. But soon he became a ladies man. All the mares would nicker to Jayce, Come visit me!
'Maggie' stood pregnant on the auction lot. If nobody buys her she goes to slaughter. We waited and watched, there was no one. In the eleventh hour we stepped up, paid her ransom and hauled her to us. She is a stunning mare, beautiful conformation, beautiful soul. She is a wonderful sweet mother. Who would throw away such a life?
'Honey' a well bred quarter horse, once a roping champion in Calif. was ridden and worked until her front legs could barely keep her standing. She was found one morning tied to a hitching post, discarded like yesterdays news. She has made wonderful progress in rehabilitation, and with good care is now comfortable and sound. She is a resident now living in Santa Cruz County.
"Hunter" and his dam were culled off of a Thoroughbred breeding farm because he was less than perfect. Destined for slaughter, they both came to Pregnant Mare Rescue. Hunter became a magnificent gelding, standing almost 18 hands high. He holds a huge heart and his personality is hilarious as he throws anything he can pick up. Hunter said Aloha to us last month and is now living in Hawaii.
"Mollie" remembering what it is to be a horse, a happy, healthy well loved horse. As of Jan 2016 mollie is still with us, waiting for the one special person to help her become a companion once again.
'Peanut' must have been somebody's love at one time. Waiting, heavy in foal she was pulled off the slaughter lot. she has transitioned as though it was all meant to be. She is happy, very congenial and willing. You can see Peanut has been loved in her lifetime. We'll ensure she is loved for always.
Peanut lives here in Santa Cruz County and enjoys her very own person.
'Phoebe' was pulled off the Fallon, Nevada feedlot awaiting her fate. Would she be purchased and getting a new home, or boarding the truck en-route to the slaughterhouse? Pregnant Mares deserve to become mothers. Is that too much to ask?
Phoebe and her sweet colt Diesel are now living in Arizona ~ We call it the good life!
'Sable'...From the Fallon Feedlot in Nevada. She has come a very long way trusting. She cannot believe people can be so kind. She has warmed up to us and she is responding beautifully. Sable, along with Malibu are down in southern Calif. at Rancho Refugio , a permanent sanctuary for equines needing a place to forever call home.
'Smokey' stands proud of his independence. The first of the Spring 2014 foals to arrive, you can be sure he is in charge. Smokey is now named Adagio, a very proud name for a beautiful gelding on his way to becoming a show horse.
Whiskey, our resident instructor patiently teaches the children about the magic and wonder of horses. Each class that is held, each time they arrive, he knows its serious business. Keeping little ones safe and encouraging them to discover their inner courage is important work. he completes the task every time, without ever saying a word. ~
