PMR created ‘Share & Care’, a collection of numerous programs, workshops and classes for the underserved population in the Santa Cruz, Santa Clara and Monterey Counties. Our unique approach of allowing supervised, quiet non-structured time with the horses allows us to create a tremendously positive impact in the lives of those participating.
Unlike other horse rescues, our horses are with us at least eighteen months while they foal (deliver) and nurse their babies. We discovered that the horses had this healing effect on the children, thus began to develop children’s programs enabling the unwanted horse to heal the troubled child. What we have now realized is that horses help everyone, not just children, and that people from every walk of life can benefit from the various non-riding programs offered at our ranch.

The READ program (Reading Equine Art Duo) is a partnership where children and horses come together and create a mutual synergistic relationship. Learning to read is perhaps the most important skill a child can learn because it is a gateway for obtaining information. In essence, it opens a world of opportunities to them. The underserved population of children often experience anxiety or nervousness about reading, their grades reflecting their struggles. Horses can help ameliorate this simply by being present. The child knows the horse will not judge them and this lowers their affective filter. As a result, the child is more receptive and responsive to the learning experience. This in turn creates a positive, mutual reciprocation for both the child and the horse. This relationship is grounded in the horse’s natural nurturing energy. It is this energy that sparks the synergy. The program consists of 3 phases: reading a story to a horse, creating art, and sharing through retelling. We have documented many children raising their reading ability by two to seven levels in a very short span of time.
This program is hosted by Dr. Lisa Algee PH.D Reading Specialist

THE WONDER OF HORSES - WHAT CAN THEY TEACH US?.
Pregnant Mare Rescue acknowledges it is an important opportunity for people to interact and spend time with horses in a quiet, non- threatening, non-riding environment. This is because horses have a unique ability to reflect or mirror the human condition or state-of-being. From these experiences of just spending time, the healing and benefits take place. Horses can sense a human heartbeat from four feet away. Within four minutes they synchronize their heartbeat to yours. Small tasks such as those listed below are created to keep the visitor focused, and the healing takes place overtime. - Why do I have to find my quiet place? - Why are horses ears so special? - Do horses have feelings? - What is body language? - How do horses know when to feel safe? Measurable progress has been documented with clients addressing fear, abandonment issues, violence and trauma. This program is hosted by Lynn Hummer or Denna Stone. ‘Pennies for PMR’ (Ages 3 to 10)
The feeling of being able to make a difference creates the foundation for a lifetime of giving of oneself for a greater cause. Pennies for PMR is a program created to empower the young, and teach them the value of giving. Toddlers through elementary school children are invited to select a coffee can, plastic jug or other box for collecting coins. The jug can be dazzling, a collage of horse pictures, including all the fun stuff kids can dream up. Once decorated, they go and fill them up explaining to parents and teachers and school pals why they are collecting the coins. Once full they come for a visit and we show them exactly how their donation helps the horses. We take pictures, and with parents permission they are rock stars for the day on our website. Horse shaped sugar cookies top off the visit! This program is hosted by Lynn Hummer or Denna Stone. |
